Vanilla Oatmeal Applesauce Bread Recipe
Vanilla oatmeal applesauce bread has quickly become my newest favorite sweet bread recipe. Its tender, delicate crumb melts in your mouth, carrying a gentle sweetness that feels both comforting and indulgent. The subtle warmth of vanilla blends harmoniously with the wholesome heartiness of oatmeal. The natural sweetness of applesauce creates a loaf that is as satisfying as it is flavorful. Beyond its delectable taste, this bread is remarkably approachable. It is easy to prepare and quick to bake. This makes it perfect for busy mornings, afternoon tea, or a cozy snack by the fire. Each slice offers a moment of simple pleasure. You can enjoy it plain or lightly toasted. Spread it with a pat of butter. These options turn an everyday treat into something truly special.
First off, the ingredients are delightfully simple. They are everyday staples that most kitchens already have. These include fragrant vanilla extract. They also include hearty rolled oats, naturally sweet applesauce, and basic flour. It is wonderfully reassuring to follow a recipe that doesn’t require hunting down obscure items. You won’t need to make extra trips to the store. I’ve always loved creating delicious baked goods from what’s already sitting in my cupboards. One of my biggest pet peeves is wasting ingredients or letting food go unused. So when I discovered this recipe, I was genuinely thrilled—a perfect combination of simplicity, practicality, and irresistible flavor. It’s the kind of recipe that makes you feel accomplished before you even take the first bite.
The entire family also loved it. The bread doesn’t last long. It only lasts a day in my house. I typically have to make two loaves at a time. This means I need to double this recipe. This oatmeal applesauce bread is perfect as a sweet breakfast bread. Top it with apple butter, carrot cake jam, or a compound butter. My girls request a slice for an after-school snack. They enjoy it while they work on homework. Alternatively, heat it in the microwave and top it with your favorite vanilla ice cream for a delicious dessert. Because the bread is a delicate and soft crumble that acts more like a cake than true bread.
I have baked this bread often. In my quest for healthier eating habits, I have substituted the white granulated sugar with granulated Swerve sugar. The ratio is one to one. I used 1 cup of Swerve sugar for every 1 cup of white sugar in the recipe.
Our cost to make this recipe.
My calculated approximate cost to make this sweet bread is about $5.17 per loaf, or $0.43 per serving slice if you can cut 12 thin slices out of one loaf. For our homestead, we reduce the cost by growing our own apples. We make applesauce and apple butter to can in the water bath canner. We also make our own vanilla extract, which can be much cheaper than the store-bought kind. This recipe uses an entire tablespoon of vanilla, which costs over $2.00 for the store-bought variety. This is the bulk of the cost.

- Loved the bread? I doubled the recipe and added chopped walnuts. I always have to add nuts to this type of bread. Thank you!
- This is sweet but not overwhelming, and not dry at all. Definitely will add to the rotation.
- Perfect bread. Doubled the recipe, reduced sugar and added a few craisins. I am now making my second batch for the day.
- Simple pantry staples. Used pumpkin pie spice and old fashioned oats. After cooling, will freeze for future use.
- Excellent bread! Very simple but full of flavor. I added raisins to one batch, and dried cranberries to a 2nd batch. One recipe makes 3 mini loaves. Freezes well.
